Orbital is a patented edge compute infrastructure layer that integrates seamlessly into O&G data infrastructure, and is the result of 3 years research and development by Kashmir Intelligence to address the need for high-performing AI & ML in O&G production environments without the cost, security, and performance issues associated with cloud and centralised data solutions.

The ISA-95 framework helps us understand how different parts of a refinery process work together. Here’s how Orbital fits right into a refinery’s current process and brings the power of AI on-site.

Level 0: Production Process

This is where refining happens, with equipment like distillation columns and reactors generating real-time data on temperature, pressure, and flow rates.

Level 1: Sensing & Manipulation

Sensors collect data from the equipment in Level 0. These sensors measure variables and use PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) to control and optimise the equipment.

Level 2: Control Systems

These systems monitor and control the sensors and equipment from Level 1, adjusting processes to maintain output quality. Orbital can be deployed here or at higher levels, using AI to improve control via deep learning. It connects with other systems using protocols like OPC-UA and Modbus.

Level 3: Manufacturing Operations Management

This level manages workflows and operations, integrating data from Level 2 into SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. Orbital’s outputs, such as performance metrics and process insights, go directly into the SCADA database, helping operators manage operations efficiently and identify anomalies quickly.

Level 4: Business Planning and Logistics

This level uses SCADA data from Level 3 for broader business functions like ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). Orbital’s insights on production efficiency, Energy Intensity Index (EII), and cost analysis help planners make informed decisions, maximise economic benefits, improve margins, and drive improvements.
